Twenty years in control rooms

Control-systems designer. OT cyber-security consultant. Worldwide experience. Business advisor. Founder.

Ilan Shaya

I started as a control engineer, programming PLCs for process plants, and spent the next twenty years designing control and communications systems at every scale: a wind tunnel for the defense industry, five hundred controllers across the Weizmann Institute's campuses, and a central energy system for three hundred Shufersal supermarkets.

In 2013 the plants I had designed began to be attacked, and I moved to defending them. I founded ICS Security, built two products, wrote a course that governments bought, and ran risk assessments in power stations in Israel and Turkey. Today I split my time between designing control systems, designing their defenses, and advising companies on growth and on AI.

What I have done

  • Designed control systems for twenty years, in Israel and abroad; in OT/ICS cyber defense since 2013.
  • Cyber advisor on critical infrastructure to Israel's Ministry of Defense, to government ministries at home and abroad, and to enterprise clients.
  • Risk assessments of critical facilities in Israel and abroad: power stations, hydro-electric plants, a gas facility.
  • Founder and CEO of SmartLogic (control and automation) and of ICS Security (OT cyber defense).
  • Developed two protection products, SPARTA (patented) and GRAPHENE.
  • Wrote and delivered the Critical Infrastructure Protection course to the governments of Singapore and Japan, among others.

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science and Mathematics, with honours
  • MBA studies, business administration
  • CSSA, Certified SCADA Security Architect
  • IEI Certified (Belden, Germany), industrial control-system protection
  • Control and cyber-security training in the United States
  • Working fluency in NIST SP 800-82, NERC CIP and ISA/IEC 62443
